The Delhi Police's Special Cell has arrested a criminal wanted for a murder committed in Mukherjee Nagar last year. Police said the accused is wanted in several other cases of attempt to murder and was carrying a reward of Rs 75,000 on his arrest.

According to the senior officers, the accused, identified as Sombir alias Cheli, was arrested on Sunday. A police team had laid a trap to nab him but he opened fire to scare the raiding party.

DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav said Sombir was arrested from a PVC market in Tikri at 10.35 pm, following a scuffle during which he pulled out a pistol and tried to fire at the raiding party. He was, however, overpowered and nabbed, Yadav said.

Talking about the murder, the officer said: "Sombir had a close friend, Umesh. In January, 2011, Umesh's paternal uncle Chand Singh was murdered by the relatives of a criminal, Satyawan, and a few others. Umesh wanted to take revenge from Satyawan and Sombir promised to help him. They came to know Satyawan's brother Amit was living with his brother-in-law in Mukherjee Nagar. The duo then arranged for weapons and on July 26, shot Amit dead. Early next morning, they also attacked Amit's uncle but he escaped with critical injuries."

An Italian-made sophisticated pistol loaded with five live cartridges was recovered from his possession, police said.
