Several lakhs of students left shocked when the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday announced to hold re-examination of class XII Economics and class Xth Mathematics after there question papers were leaked before the exam. Agitated by the move, scores of students, parents and activists took to the streets across the country while Delhi remained the heart of protests since then.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Board had said that it had "taken cognizance of certain happenings in the conduct of examinations" and decided to hold re-tests to "uphold the sanctity of the board examination and in the interest of fairness to students". The Class 10 Mathematics exam that was held on Wednesday, while the Economics paper was held on last Monday.

Within 90 minutes of the end of the Class X Maths exam on Wednesday, the board declared that students will have to sit for a retest following reports of the question paper having been leaked. "We were shocked after hearing the news of the re-examination. It was like a blow for us. But why should all students suffer just because few students received the leaked paper before the examination?" asked Akshay Singh, a class Xth student at St Thomas School, who was among those hundreds of students who had gathered at Jantar Mantar to protest on Thursday.

Many of the agitating students and parents claimed to have received calls offering to sell papers in Rs 10,000 to 15,000. "My son had received a call from his classmate offering copies of Mathematics exams in exchange for Rs 15,000 on Tuesday evening. He told me about the call but I did not believe it and asked him to ignore. Who knew that the papers that were making rounds on Whatsapp would match with those given to the students," said a parent of a class Xth student at DPS, Mathura Road.

Later on Friday, the Board announced to conduct re-test for class XII mathematics on April 25 and said that the leak of class Xth paper was only restricted to Delhi-NCR and Haryana and re-test, if conducted, will be there in these regions only. The development sent students into a tizzy with them demanding re-exam for all or none. "almost all papers were available on Whatsapp a day before the exam. The leaked copy of class XII Accountancy paper matched with the set-II of the paper distributed to examinees. Why the board is not conducting a re-exam for the subject?" asked Ishan Yadav, a class XII student at St Thomas.

VOICES

Its unfortunate that the authorities have failed to keep the paper secret. If someone can share one paper through a social networking site, then they can share more such papers. The government could have taken better safety measures right after SSC paper was leaked.

Although I have passed my schooling, the news of CBSE paper leak was like a news of the disaster. Students who work hard and prepare for their examinations were led down by the government.
—Shruti Agarwal (21)

After the paperleak most of the students have lost faith in the authorities, as not only SSC students are left red-faced but the students of class 12th who were preparing for the entrance examination and other examinations will now need to go through re-examination, which is unjustified.
—Sandeep (21)

First, the government fails to prevent SSC paper leak, then they fail to secure CBSE exams, and now after their repeated failures they decide to punish innocent students who were protesting against the paper leak.
—Manpreet Kaur (21)

My sister was set to join us for a family vacation, but the unclear situation created after all this paper leak forced us to cancel the tickets. Moreover, CBSE students appearing next year will also question the credibility of these two organizations.
—Monalisa Baidya (20)

After the alleged leak, how can students expect the examination procedure to be fair? If one can leak papers he can also help students get through examinations and maybe even help them secure desired percentage.

EXPERT SPEAK

It’s actually a major concern for students. They have to go through immense psychological pressure whenever something like this happened. Now, when the students don’t want to give a re-exam and they are angry over it, why can’t we find an alternative for them. The schools can take an internal exam at least for class Xth students. Also, there is a need to standardised public education in India to shed some load from the CBSE.
