That some residents need to own multiple cars has now become an issue for the residents of South Delhi's Moti Bagh area, who are now forced to walk a long distance to reach their homes as most of the footpath and service lanes are crammed with vehicles, which the owners cannot park near their homes due to lack of parking space.

Although some residents have made a provision for parking a vehicle in their homes but the parking space is not adequate as most of them own multiple cars. Owing to shortage of parking space, the residents park their vehicles on footpaths and make it difficult for pedestrians.

"The illegally parked cars have been a headache for the residents. Most of the time we have to use main roads to walk, which is very dangerous, especially for the children and senior citizens," said Vipin Malhotra, a resident of South Moti Bagh.

Apart from cars, some of the bylanes and footpaths have also been encroached on by by security guards hired by the residents for their security.

"Outside every luxury house, you can find a security booth to provide security to the residents of that house. However, these residents have encroached on service lanes and roads to install these security booths which further compounds the problems," said Animesh Jha, a shopkeeper in the area.

Meanwhile, some residents also claimed that the presence of colleges in the vicinity has also intensified the problems. According to them, the students coming from other areas park their vehicles in front of their gates and when told not to do so, they pick a fight.

"Students of Delhi University park their vehicles in front of our gates on daily basis. Whenever we tell them not to park, they hurl abuses and refuse to move their cars," said Tanju Mishra, a resident of Moti Bagh's Anand Niketan area.

Even though traffic police personnel are on duty in the area and even tow away vehicles whenever necessary, the residents and students have still not given up parking on the roadside.

"On occasions, we warn people about illegal parking but whenever it becomes necessary we tow away the vehicles. However, because of the colleges in proximity, the area attracts a large number of vehicles on a area daily," said a traffic personnel deployed in the area.

If residents and authorities do not find a solution to the problem at the earliest, the situation can prove to be dangerous in case of a medical emergency or a fire.
