South Delhi Municipal Corporation continues with cleanliness drive

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has been concentrating on source segregation of the waste and forceful campaigns against the use of plastic bags in the four zones.

A large number of RWAs, Market Association members and school children are taking part in the activities. They have been distributing handbills to disseminate the ill effects of plastic which takes ages to absorb itself with the mother earth. The officers concerned contacted traders to make them aware about the bad effect of plastic use. One can see a large number of paper bags and jute bags being used in the markets. A senior officer stated that the five markets in each zone will soon be declared plastic free.

The cleanliness of the ponds in Najafgarh Zone was started on Wednesday at Nangli Sakrawati and Pochanpur in the presence of councillors. It is generally observed that accumulation of waste in an outside pond result in a breakout of various diseases.

A number of vehicles, trucks, JCBs and compactors were thoroughly washed at central stores. Apart from this around two dozen public toilets were also taken up for cleaning and sanitation exercise. Sanitary napkin vending machine was installed in another pink toilet at Janakpuri.

Under special drive in all four zones the activities related to the segregation, raising awareness against plastic use were witnessed. Shyam Vihar, Chhawla, Manglapuri, Palam Dabri Road, Dada Dev Mandir, Sagarpur, Nangli Sakrawat and Pochanpur under Najafgarh Zone; Abul Fazal Enclave, Tugalkabad, Sukhdev Vihar, Srinivas Puri, Kalkaji, Anna Nagar and MCD school Andrews Ganj under Central Zone, Green Park,Ambedkar Nagar, Pushp Vihar Under South zone and Subhash Nagar, Tagore Garden, Mahavir Nagar and Pratap Nagar under West Zone special sanitation drive were organised. During these drives, the citizens were explained the process and benefits of source segregation of the waste and exhorted usage of jute bags instead of plastic bags. The Safai Karamcharis and citizens joined in the cleanliness of parks and bus stop.
