With an aim to tackle the rising level of pollution in the city, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is planning to procure 30 mini road sweepers-cum-vacuum machines. The mechanical sweeping by the machines will help in effectively removing dust and waste from roads.

The municipal corporation had tried its hand at something similar earlier as well but the plan did not work out. Officials said a total of 29 machines were deployed then, but the lack of ideal road conditions rendered them unusable. The bulky machines were difficult to maneuver, especially in residential colonies where a large number of cars is generally parked throughout the localities.

“We will soon procure 30 mini road sweeper vacuum machines to sweep the roads. Rs 4.67 crore has been sanctioned for the purpose. The machines will be deployed in all four zones, as per the requirement,” SDMC Mayor Shyam Sharma said.

Last year, a report by IIT Kanpur on air pollution and greenhouse gases in Delhi stated that soil and dust contributed 27 per cent of the PM10 and PM2.5 in the Capital during summers. Studies have shown PM10 leads to respiratory and heart problems, especially in children.

According to municipal officials, the new machines will clean and sweep the roads with less than 60 feet right of way. The mechanical sweeping will help in effectively removing dust and waste from roads and will also minimise the need for manual sweeping.

“The machines are being procured to make all roads dust and garbage free, keeping in view the message of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Mechanised sweeping will also bring down dust level,” Sharma said.

Previously, the Delhi government had decided to switch to mechanical sweeping on all Public Works Department (PWD) roads as a preventive measure to curb pollution. At present, the PWD has six vacuuming machines that operate around Naraina, AIIMS, and Mathura Road.
