Just ahead of the 2017 municipal polls, the south civic body has announced to install 75,000 LED streetlights in the areas under its jurisdiction by January next year. The proposal has come even before the ongoing project of installing 1.8 lakh LEDs is still far from complete.

Of these, 2,500 would be at the dark spots identified by the corporation along with Delhi Police earlier this year, to prevent crimes against women.

“We had identified vulnerable dark spots, which will now be lit under the scheme. Besides, 16,000 high mast lights are being replaced with LEDs in December itself. We have already installed 100 LED street poles in each of our 104 wards,” said Shailendra Singh, Chairman, Standing Committee, south corporation.

He added that there was a backlog of 25,000 poles that were without lights or were non-functional, which too will be illuminated in a phased manner.

“We hope to complete the entire project by the third week of January. The existing 20,000 high mast lights in parks will also be replaced, starting the first week of January,”Singh said. Besides, the corporation announced another big-ticket project before the polls. The corporation plans to install solar panels on 40 of its buildings, including zonal buildings, schools and major hospitals in its area in the Capital. The project will be taken up at a cost of Rs 17 crore.

“Work on installing solar panels will begin by December 15 itself. The panels are being installed under a project with a life span of 25 years. Its cost will be recovered within seven years, and thereafter, the corporation will get free power for its consumption, leaving surplus to be sold for inclusion in the grid,” said a senior corporation official.
