Giving away your vehicle? You may not have to do the rounds of the regional transport office (RTO) as the Delhi government plans to streamline the process of transferring vehicle ownership or the Registration Certificate (RC). The transport department plans to make the process online and hassle-free.

The existing procedure is haphazard and requires running around government offices. "We are proposing to streamline the transferring of RC so that people don't have to do rounds of the department and regional offices. We are working to get a centralised online system, where the facility can be availed without any hassle," a senior officer said.

The department, however, has also been facing several challenges, such as slow internet connectivity. "We have been brainstorming and taking suggestions from experts to make it a customer-friendly service. We hope to launch it soon," the officer said.

Recently, the department had introduced sending the RCs at the doorsteps of the owners via Speed Post, which did away with the hassle of going to collect the document from the zonal office. The plan was part of the department's major initiative to put up all these services online, allowing easy access for the same.

Last month, the government had put as many as 30 services online, including applying for driving license (DL), issuance of caste certificates, birth and death certificates, and registration of marriage, among others.

Earlier this year, Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot had said that the department also plans to make the process of issuing pollution under control (PUC) certificates streamlined so that people comply with the rules. Gahlot said the department plans to send SMS reminders to vehicle owners for PUC checks.

At present, PUC norms are violated by a large number of vehicle owners, adding to the fuel emissions and resulting in pollution.
