The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) plans to install hi-definition cameras at the Capital's 15 entry points in order to assess the volume of traffic crossing into the city. The move, which came with the corporation hiring a new agency to manage its toll tax collection booths, is also slated to help traffic police in decongesting these routes.

The cameras will be recording the movement of vehicles at these points for over a fortnight. The entry points include DND toll bridge, Rajokri border, Tikri border, Kondli, Aya Nagar, Kalindi Kunj, Kapashera, Badarpur-Faridabad, Gahzipur, Shahdara flyover and Mohan Garden, among others.

According to officials, the civic body plans to tie up with the traffic police and other government agencies such as the PWD for the exercise.

"The data collected from the recording can be used by traffic police. The data will have the number of vehicles coming from neighbouring states. Also, the time slots during which the flow of traffic increases," said a senior Corporation official.

Officials also said that none of the government departments have data to study the volume of traffic in the city for analysis.

"The exercise was taken up a few years ago, but in selected areas. This assessment will be taken up on a large scale and will help make plans for policies and development work in the future. A tender regarding the project has already been floated," the official said.

A control and monitoring unit will also be set up at the corporation headquarters itself to view the recordings on a daily basis.

"We will be forming a four to five member team to study the recordings and compile the data after thorough analysis," he added.
