A 25-year-old youth died while saving his father, who was attacked by four auto-lifters, in southeast Delhi's Jaitpur area during the early hours of Saturday. The auto-lifters were caught red-handed stealing a parked vehicle by the father-son duo and in a bid to escape, they sped away crushing them, leaving the son spot dead and the father grievously injured.
The deceased was identified as Vishal who lived with his father Mohan Lal, mother, sister Shivani and a specially-abled younger brother Rohit.
According to the police, the incident took place around 4 am when Shivani and Rohit woke up hearing some noise in the locality. On seeing out of their window, the siblings found two men breaking the glass of a parked WagonR car and trying to steal the vehicle.
"The siblings woke their father and elder brother up. Seeing that the two men were trying to steal the car that belonged to one of their neighbours, the father-son duo rushed out of their house and raised an alarm. Since it was too early in the morning, the neighbours kept sleeping, the family claimed. Seeing the father-son duo, the two auto-lifters also got scared and in a bid to escape, one started the WagonR car, while another rushed to the vehicle they had come in where two of their accomplices were waiting," said a senior police officer.
Meanwhile, the father and the son tried to catch hold of the thieves and a scuffle broke out between them. "It was then that one of the accused started the car on which they had arrived and tried to speed away. As Mohan Lal tried to snatch the keys from the auto-lifters, they drove away with him hanging on to the vehicle. To save his father, Vishal pulled him away, but came under the speeding car and the accused fled," the police said.
DCP southeast, Chinmoy Biswal said the injured were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre where Vishal was declared brought dead while his father was admitted to the ICU. It has been learnt that as both father and son tried to stop the thieves from taking away the vehicle, they drove rashly dragging them for meters. The scanning of CCTV cameras and local inquiry are going on. Special teams have been formed to trace and nab the accused," Biswal said.
