Son arrested for stabbing parents, sister in Vasant Kunj

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Suraj Verma, a first year civil engineering student

Enraged over his parents not letting him have an exuberant lifestyle and pressuring for studies, a 19- year-old boy stabbed them to death and also killed his younger sister, who witnessed the episode unfolding in front of her eyes on Wednesday morning in Vasant Kunj area of South west Delhi. Police said that the accused brought a knife and scissor to commit the crime on Tuesday while his frequent change in his statements led to his arrest.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Suraj Verma, a first year civil engineering student, stabbed his father Mithilesh Verma (45), mother Siya (40) and sister Neha(15) while he injured himself to portray the case as an attempt of robbery.

Locals said that the incident took place at around 4:30 am in the morning. One of the locals was returning from the hospital at around 4:30am when he heard Suraj crying for help. However, they claimed that they did not hear any commotion when the murder took place.

"He told me that his parents have been killed. I jumped into his house from my balcony and went inside the house with him. The entire house was ransacked and Mithilesh was on the bed of a room while Siya and Neha were found in a pool of blood in the other. I immediately informed the others and called the police," said Pintu, a local.

Police said they received the call police control room call at around 5 am from the locals. When they reached the house it was found partially ransacked but cash, jewellery and other valuables were found intact. A murder case was registered at the Vasant Kunj police station and the son was taken into custody and started investigating the case.

"The injured family members were rushed to a nearby hospital where the couple and their daughter were declared brought dead on arrival. While we took Suraj to record his statement. Suraj told us that two men entered his house and attacked him first after which he fell unconscious," said DCP (southwest) Devender Arya.

He further stated that he gained consciousness, he found his family members stabbed. However, his statement was found to be suspicious. We had formed eight teams to investigate the case.

"The things which were suspicious were as the entire house was locked how did people sneak in? Later when he was questioned because he had stated that the house was robbed however nothing was stolen. Suraj didn't have answers to the questions. The knife recovered from the house was found to be purchased from Mehrauli. The shop keeper disclosed that the knife used in committing the crime was purchased by Suraj," said Arya.

During sustained interrogation, Suraj broke down and confessed to have committed the crime.

"He disclosed that he was found of a lavish lifestyle but his parents opposed it. Two years ago he had flunked in his 12th board examinations following which his parents didn't allow him to roam around much or go out. He was pressurised for studying and staying at home," said Arya.

Police said that he had been planning to eliminate his father from the last three months and on Tuesday he gained courage and decided to execute the plan.

"On Tuesday evening, he purchased a knife and scissor from Mehrauli for R 200 and came back home and waited for his parents to sleep. He woke up at 3 am and went to his parents room and stabbed his father first. On hearing the cries, the mother woke up. He then injured her. Later when his minor sister woke up and saw him stabbing the parents, she ran to save herself," said Arya.

Suraj ran behind his sister and stabbed her to death in the meanwhile the mother came to save her but she was stabbed again. Suraj then made a wound on his finger. He had planned ot run away from the hosue several times but was in vain.

Mithlesh Verma, a contractor, was living with his family in the house for the last 18 years. His wife Siya was working at an NGO, his son Suraj is pursuing civil engineering from a private college in Gurgaon, while his daughter Neha was studying in class 9 at a private school in Vasant Kunj.
