In all true spirits, a sister has given a new lease of life to her elder brother on the eve of Raksha Bandhan in the national capital. The only sister among the three brothers has donated one of her kidnets to her elder brother who was suffering from chronic kidney disease.
Elaf Naziyah, 36 from Bagdad saved life of her 38-year-old brother Mohammed Naziyah Majeed who has been undergoing dialysis for the last one year. "Nothing is more important to me than my brother. Without him there's nothing left in this world for me."
She had been witnessing that her brother's dialysis sessions were draining the life out of him as he was suffering both mentally and physically.
"He was constantly tired and weak," Elaf said.
The transplant was carried out on Saturday. "Mohammed Naziyah Majeed's had 90% damage to his kidneys. His health was deteriorating and transplant was the best alternative to dialysis. At first Mohammed's wife had offered to donate her kidney to save her husband's life, but the transplant couldn't materialize due to different blood groups. This is when the donor came forward to donate her kidney and give him a new lease of life. This shows the unconventional bonding between the two,' said Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Director, Nephrology and renal transplant, QRG Health City Hospitals in Faridabad.
In India, about 2.5 lakh people require kidney transplant every year. But only about 10,000 get it because of the scarcity of donors. Most of the kidneys are retrieved from living donors. Doctors also revealed that while 70 percent of the kidney donors are women, only less than one-third receive kidneys when needed.
