Sindhi food and Sufi music at two-day festival in Delhi

Sindhi Academy and Department of Art, Culture and Languages of the Delhi government is presenting a two-day Sindhi Sufi Music and Sindhi Food festival 2015 that culminates on March 22.

A celebration of Sindhi culture through food and music brings together eminent singers here beginning on Saturday. Sindhi Academy and Department of Art, Culture and Languages of the Delhi government is presenting a two-day Sindhi Sufi Music and Sindhi Food festival 2015 that culminates on March 22. 

Singers Indira Naik, Dushyant Ahuja and Sadhna Bhatia have been lined up to render Sufiana kalams on the first day. Classically trained in the Patiala Gayaki, Indira has performed inside India and has traveled the world enthralling audiences with live renditions of sufi, ghazals, bhajans and thumris.

A well-known singer and live performer, Sadhna has lent her voice to numerous albums, television songs, and stage performances. Dushyant Ahuja has been a folk Sufi singer with Gujarat state Sangeet Natya Academy since 1978 and he has been a singing artist with India Radio since then.

Meanwhile,performances by Pankaj Jeswani and Mohit Lalwani has been lined up on the second day of the Sindhi Sufi Music and Sindhi Food fest. Lalwani, first came to prominence at a young age when he made his way to the national stage of Indian Idol 4 in 2008. However, his musical journey had begun much earlier under the tutelage of Ustad Aftab Ahmed Khan that introduced him to Indian classical music. Lalwani graduated with a degree in music from Delhi University and gained popularity on the Delhi music scene with his performances with his band Rooh.

A versatile singer, Jeswani is at ease in a wide range of genres, be it sufi, ghazals, bhajans, folk as well as Bollywood. "In fact, he can comfortably switch between Sindhi, Punjabi and Rajasthani folks and appear at ease in all of these forms," say organisers. Jewsani has been awarded by the Sahitya Kala Parishad for his rich contribution to music.

Organisers have also said a special documentary screening on Sindhis will be held on March 22. The documentary has been scripted by Suresh Khatri.

The Sindhi Academy was established as an autonomous organisation in the year 1994 for propagation, promotion and development of Sindhi language, literature and culture as an integral part of composite culture of Delhi. The Academy has been playing a catalytic role in the proliferation of the Sindhi literary and cultural activities in the sphere of music, folk dances, seminars, symposia, short story, poetry, novel, literary criticism, drama etc.
