Signature campaign to promote waste segregation

Ahead of the World Environment Day, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) will launch a signature campaign on Wednesday, to encourage residents across its 104 wards to segregate dry and wet waste. The World Environment Day is observed on June 5.

The BJP-led civic bodies in the Capital have failed to implement waste segregation in the last five years.

As part of the signature campaign, the corporation will have residents pledge to develop a habit of segregating waste in these two categories, in a bid to protect the environment. Segregation of waste helps in recycling and processing it. Delhi has been reeling under toxic levels of air pollution, and nearly 10 per cent of it is comes from landfill fires.

South corporation Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat said the move will come as a significant contribution to the Swachh Bharat Mission. "I will make sure all councillors complete the work of administering the pledge to residents at the earliest," she said.

The Mayor also launched the Swachh Map mobile app to allow residents to post pictures of garbage being dumped in any area. The application was launched in her own ward, Dwarka-B, as a pilot project.
