There is a brief respite in the offing for Delhi-NCR reeling under the heat wave in the coming days. The national capital and neighbouring regions are expected to see spells of rain and thunderstorm activity between 9th May and 12th May, bringing the mercury down a few notches, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

The maximum temperature in the capital on Monday touched 42 degrees Celsius while 6th May (Saturday) recorded the hottest day during this month in five year with the mercury soaring to 43.7 degrees Celsius.

According to MET officials, thunderstorms and light showers are expected to occur in Delhi-NCR as a result of moisture convergence in Northern India.

"One or two spells of thunderstorms or dust storms during May 9 and 11 are likely to occur in Delhi-NCR. This will be accompanied by a squall exceeding 55 km/per hour on 10th May. The two phenomenons will abate the heat wave conditions over the region till 12th May," said R Vishen, scientist in-charge, IMD's regional weather forecasting centre.

The wind pattern too will see a change, said Vishen, bringing a drop in temperatures by two to three degrees.

"The day temperature is expected to settle around 39 degrees to 40 degrees while minimum temperature is set to remain between 26 degrees to 28 degrees,"said Vishen.
