The contest witnessed some unique and path-breaking business plans and ideas, including IOT technology-based smart sensor box to automate planning of waste collection, an online bakery, a health drink made from pseudo-stem of the banana plant, and customised LED lighting solutions.

Renowatt Energy of the Shankarlal Agrawal College in Salekasa has won the fifth edition of the International Business Plan Competition — Meraki 2017. The two-day event, aimed at business ideas to students looking to launch socially, financially, and technologically sustainable entrepreneurial ventures, saw the participation of several top colleges from South Asia.

Of the total entries, 13 finalists were shortlisted for the competition. They included teams from leading colleges and institutes, such as IIT-Bombay, Fore School of Management-Delhi, SCMHRD-Pune, Bhartiya Vidyapeeth-Delhi, ICAR-NAARM-Hyderabad, Shankarlal Agrawal College-Nagpur, Warick Business School-Delhi, SRCC-Delhi, JECRC-Jaipur, IBS-Hyderabad, ILEAD-Kolkata, FIIB & IMS-Ghaziabad, and Symbiosis Institute of Business Management- Bengaluru.

The contest witnessed some unique and path-breaking business plans and ideas, including IOT technology-based smart sensor box to automate planning of waste collection, an online bakery, a health drink made from pseudo-stem of the banana plant, and customised LED lighting solutions.

Team Knodues from IBS-Hyderabad secured the second spot and team Khet Majoor from SCMHRD-Pune secured the third spot.

The judges focused on strengths of business models, such as value proposition, market opportunity, and sustainable competitive advantage, to name a few. In addition, they also weighed the team's ability to execute the business plan, apart from giving advice to teams on how to build a venture that is "fundable and successful".

The panel of judges included Vishal Dixit, Ex-Partner, Mayfield Ventures, Amit Khosla, Managing Partner, Catalyst, Sarbvir Singh, Managing Director, J P Morgan, Puru Vashishtha, Indian Market Investor, Deal4loans, Anshoo Sharma, Co-founder and CEO, MagicPin, Ravi Kaushik, Partner, WaterBridge Ventures, and Manish Kheterpal, Partner, WaterBridge Ventures.
