Less than a week after a man brutally raped his 3-year-old neighbour in central Delhi, yet another horrifying incident has come to the fore in Shahdara. A resident raped his neighbour's 21-month-old daughter on Monday morning, leaving her critically injured.

The matter came to light after the accused dropped the toddler home. The child kept crying. Her mother checked her for injuries and realised that her private parts were bleeding. She then rushed her to hospital. The doctors confirmed that she had been raped and informed the police.

Subsequently, a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) registered.

According to the police, early in the morning, the accused, a tailor by profession, saw the toddler outside her home. He took her along on the pretext of getting her some sweets. "Since the man was familiar, the child did not protest. After about an hour, he dropped the toddler home and went back to work. When the child's mother, who works as a domestic help, saw her crying, she checked and realised that the toddler was bleeding. The mother then alerted her husband, a tea vendor, and they took the child to a nearby hospital," a senior police officer said.
