Self-styled godman Daati Maharaj joins probe in rape case

The Delhi Police had earlier visited his Ashram in Pali, Rajasthan but did not find him there following which summons were issued to him to join the probe.

Self-styled godman Daati Maharaj on Tuesday afternoon reached the office of the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police to join the investigation in connection with the rape case filed against him by his disciple.

The Delhi Police had earlier visited his Ashram in Pali, Rajasthan but did not find him there following which summons were issued to him to join the probe. The victim had also accompanied the police to the Pali ashram.

Daati Maharaj was questioned for around four hours before he was let off. Sources said he would be questioned again soon. Maharaj faces charges under sections 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural sex) and 354 (molestation) of the Indian Penal Code based on the complaint of a 25-year-old woman. The woman had told the police that she was sexually assaulted by the self-styled godman. The Delhi Police had registered a case at the Fatehpur Beri police station after which the case was transferred to the Crime Branch.

The Delhi Police had issued a lookout circular against Daati Maharaj, ensuring that he does not leave the country. According to the police, the victim had been a disciple of the godman for a decade but returned to her home after she was assaulted by him.

The police had given him time to join the investigation latest by Wednesday.

"The victim in her complaint told the police that when she was at the ashram in Delhi and Rajasthan, she was raped and molested by Daati Maharaj on several occasions not just in Delhi but in Rajasthan as well," said a senior police officer.

The victim also mentioned the name of two other disciples who also assaulted her. In her complaint, the victim has also named a female disciple who would ask the girl to go to the Dati's room. The female disciple would tell the victim that she was not the only one but other women also go to his room and seek blessings.

The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. The victim returned home to her native village in Rajasthan. Initially, she did not report the matter to the police but later confided in her parents and then the family decided to register a case.

Daati Maharaj was questioned for around four hours before he was let off. Sources said he would be questioned again soon.
