Secretary among three held for blackmailing Paytm boss

The Gautam Budh Nagar police have arrested three including the personal assistant of Paytm owner for allegedly trying to extort Rs 20 crore from the founder of Paytm Vijay Shekhar after threatening to leak stolen personal data and confidential information on Monday from office area in sector 5 Noida.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Sonia Dhawan, secretary of Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar, her husband Rupak Jain and Devendra Kumar, who worked as senior manager in the administration department of the company.

"We received a complaint from Shekhar who allegedly that Dhawan, his secretary had access to his personal laptop and had allegedly stolen some data," said a senior police officer.

He further alleged that Dhawan had been working with Paytm for around 10 years now.

"Later she along with her husband Rupak Jain planned to steal some personal information of the company. To proceed with the plan they contacted Devendra Kumar, the senior manager in the administration in Paytm," said a senior police officer.

Kumar then approached one of his acquaintance Rohit Chomal to call and blackmail Shekhar and ask him for 20 cr RS.

According to the spokesperson of Paytm, this was not user data, rather it was confidential data and information of the owner through which the accused tried to extort money from the owner.

"Noida Police has arrested three people including one female employee of Paytm in case of extortion. The employee along with two other accomplices attempted to extort money from Vijay Shekhar Sharma on the pretext of leaking his personal data. We are standing by our colleagues till the police inquiry reaches its meaningful conclusion," said the spokesperson.

Police said that they are not clear about the exact data stolen.

"The data that was stolen was personal and confidential. While we are working to know the exact nature of the stolen data. We have recovered the call recordings," said a senior police officer.

Police said that accused have been sent to jail while they will request for a police custody remand to gather more information.

"We have roped in the cyber cell to investigate the case accused while Chomal, is absconding at the moment and teams have been formed to nab him," said a senior police officer.
