Over 150 city traders on Tuesday, sat on a day-long hunger strike protesting against the sealing drive on the Tank Road in Karol Bagh. The traders were demanding a relaxation on conversion charges.

According to a member of the Chambers of Traders and Industry (CTI), the sealing is being conducted without any notice, which can't be justified.

" The local shopping centres were given on commercial rates and now conversion charges are being demanded. We have been trying to meet the committee to seek relaxation for traders but nothing has happened. The hunger strike has been called only for a day, but if the authorities do not listen to our demands, we will move to the Supreme court and the strike will also be intensified," said Manish Kriplani, a member of the Delhi Mobile Association.

About 58 shops have been sealed in Karol Bagh zone.

"Sealing is being held in a dictatorial manner without any reason and ignoring the fundamental provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act,1957. This is unacceptable. The traders are being harassed. We have been running these shops for the past 50 years and no one can just come and seal them," said Vijendra Yadav, secretary of CTI.

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken also visited the grieved traders and said both the parties - AAP and BJP - have failed miserably to provide relief to them.

"Both AAP and the BJP should end their fake fight over the ongoing sealing drive. The traders should instead seek relief from the Supreme Court," said Makan

The Aam Aadmi Party supported the CTI, which claims to be associated with over 400 traders' associations. The CTI has decided to call a joint meeting on January 31 to decide further course of action.
