The three BJP-led municipal corporations decided to approach the Supreme Court and appeal for a six-month window from the ongoing sealing drive on Saturday.

In an emergency joint session called on Saturday, the mayors of three corporations — North, South and East — passed a resolution to file an appeal in the top court to provide relief to city traders from the drive for a period of six months. The AAP members, however, tried to stall the proceedings of the joint session holding placards and raising anti-BJP slogans.

The sealing drive is being conducted in the city on the directions of a Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee.  “We have passed a resolution in which we will appeal to the apex court to direct the Monitoring Committee to stop sealing for next six months. The Delhi Master Plan- 2021 was made in 2007 by the Union Government in a haste and had ignored the commercial and construction activities taking place in the city, leading to the present scenario,” the proposal stated.

Blaming the Aam Aadmi Party-led government in the city, the civic bodies said it had been three years of the Arvind Kejriwal government, but they did not pay any heed to the issue.

“The Kejriwal government turned a blind eye towards issues of the trader community all this while. The unified MCD had sent the Delhi government details about 351 roads to be notified for commercial activities and mixed land use but these roads have not been notified so far, leading to harassment of traders,” said Tilak Raj Kataria, chairman, standing committee, North Corporation.

The corporations have also demanded that a fresh survey of roads be conducted and conversion charges be determined as per the category of colonies.

Meanwhile, AAP legislators said they have sought time with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on January 29 to discuss the issue to save traders.   The committee has so far sealed over 500 commercial establishments for “misuse” of premises and “unauthourised construction” including eateries, shops, showrooms and basements.
