The RWAs and market associations of the Capital in a meeting with Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri on Wednesday agreed upon “zero-tolerance against encroachment on public land and in residential areas”. Also, the associations demanded a responsive grievance redressal mechanism for the complaints regarding the same.

The associations put forth a five-point memorandum in which they have adopted similar resolutions to be included in the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) - 2021. Also, the RWAs led by URJA (United Residents Joint Action) are also planning to present a point-wise “rebuttal” on the amendments proposed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in the MPD, in order to allow relief to traders from the ongoing sealing drive.

However, residents are apprehensive of the proposed changes while traders are in favour, as they want immediate relief from the sealing.

“There is this impression that residents and traders have been at the loggerheads. However, we have agreed upon the resolutions together to rid the city of massive encroachments. The MPD will not be a useful document if violations of the plan are overlooked. We are waiting for a meeting to be scheduled with the DDA for presenting our arguments in the changes to be made to the plan,” said Atul Goyal, president, URJA.

However, the traders’ associations led by the Confederation of All India Traders said that sealing was not a solution to the city’s problems.

Days after the Supreme Court lifted the stay from the amendments proposed to be made to the plan, traders, who have been at the receiving end of the sealing drive, welcomed the decision. However, resident associations said the proposed amendments are “not in favour” of the public at large.

Govt Failure

However, members flagged the issue that despite constant political assurances, the government has failed to relocate vendors, which is leading to chaos, choking of drains and traffic jams.
