The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has launched zero garbage initiative under its 'compose banao, compose apnao' scheme following the lines of central government's Swachh Bharat initiative.

The SDMC said the initiative would be implemented by processing and disposing of locally the entire waste generated in a particular area, hence reducing the burden at landfill sites and cut expenditure on waste transportation.

South Delhi's RK Puram is the first area to implement the plan. "The corporation is presently collecting wet garbage from approximately 1,500 houses from various sectors of RK Puram and a few restaurants nearby. In addition to this dry leaves are also being collected by the four auto tippers. The garbage is then dumped at a compost site in sector 9 for generating compost," said Dr Puneet Kumar Goel, Commissioner.

A senior officer of SDMC said, an MoU was inked with the ITC to bring awareness among the residents of R K Puram.
