More than 12 school children sustained injuries when a school van overturned in Mangolpuri area early morning on Tuesday. Three of them were seriously injured. While others managed to escape narrowly, outraged parents alleged carelessness on the school's part for allowing overloading of the private transport of schools. Police have booked the driver for rash and negligent driving.
According to the police, as told by the witnesses, the incident took place around 7 am in outer Delhi's Mangolpuri on Tuesday, when the school van was heading towards Kendriya Vidyalaya in Rohini sector 3. The initial probe revealed that a traffic cop had signalled the driver to slow down the van near the furniture market area in Mangolpuri, but the driver instead tried to speed away and rammed the vehicle into a divider leaving the students injured.
"Witnesses told the police and locals that the speed of the vehicle, a Maruti Ecco van, was such that the driver could not control it after which it overturned. Seeing this, passersby and the locals rushed to the spot and pulled out the school children who were trapped inside the vehicle. Policemen deployed nearby also rushed to the spot and all the kids were rescued in time. While most of them escaped with minor injuries, three children were injured seriously," said a senior police officer.
They were all rushed to a nearby hospital where one of the three kids was admitted for further treatment while others were discharged soon, the police said. Parents of the kids were informed and the school authorities were also alerted about the incident.
"Police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver and under other relevant sections. The matter is being probed. CCTV footages are also being checked. Other factors, whether the driver had valid permission from the school and if he was overloading the vehicle are also being looked into," the officer added.
Police have seized the vehicle and the incident is being probed.
