The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday sought response from the Centre and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a plea seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe in the suicide of former senior bureaucrat BK Bansal.

Former bureaucrat EA Sharma has filed the plea seeking setting up of an SIT, comprising officers with “impeccable integrity and independence”, to probe the case. The plea also sought prosecution of those responsible for the suicides of Bansal and his family members. A Bench of Justices J S Khehar and Arun Misra issued notices to the government and the CBI to respond to the plea.

In July, CBI had arrested Former Director General at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), Bansal, for allegedly taking illegal gratification. Soon after his arrest, his wife Satyabala (58) and daughter Neha (28) committed suicide by hanging themselves in their Madhu Vihar apartment in east Delhi.

Bansal (60), who was out on bail, and his son Yogesh (31) also committed suicide in their apartment in September. In a detailed five-page suicide note found at his home, Bansal had named CBI Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sanjeev Gautam and three other officers, including two women, for playing a pivotal role in torturing his family. He also alleged that during questioning, Gautam mentioned the name of a top BJP leader to intimidate him.

“On July 18 and 19, two CBI officers named Amrita Kaur and Rekha Sangwan slapped my wife, scratched and abused her. DIG Gautam later asked one of the officers to torture my wife and daughter to an extent that both of them were left to die,” Bansal had written in the suicide note.

It was not the first time that the CBI officers were put in the dock for their poor handling of the case. On July 19, a special court hearing the matter at the Patiala House had pulled up DIG Gautam for his insensitive handling of the situation, after Bansal’s wife and daughter had killed themselves.

Following the allegations, the agency began an internal probe.
