The original Nobel Peace citation awarded for child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi, which was stolen from his home over a month ago, was recovered from the Aravali jungles in Sangam Vihar late on Friday night. The Delhi Police said there have been only five instances in the world when a Nobel Prize has been stolen. In India, it was the second such case. Earlier in 2004, the replica of Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel prize was stolen. It has not been recovered till date.

"I am thankful to the Delhi Police for their efforts to recover the Nobel Replica and the original citation. The Nobel Prize belongs to every Indian citizen and child. Since I am the son of a policeman, I have always understood their sense of responsibility and commitment towards the nation," Satyarthi said.

Thieves had struck at Satyarthi's home on February 7, while he was abroad for work. On February 12, the Delhi Police arrested three brothers, Rajan alias Natta, 25, Vinod alias Pinki, 35, and Sunil alias Sonu, 28, for the burglary but the trio did not know the importance of the citation and did not reveal where they dumped it.

A 15-member team was then constituted to map all the areas where the accused had travelled and camped. "The areas were plotted on a grid map. Every day for the last 25 days, the team has been searching each area, along with dog squads, mounted police, and the local police," Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), south-east, Romil Baaniya said.

Roads in Govindpuri, shooting range, Tughlakabad, and forest areas in Ghaziabad and Faridabad were also scanned.

"Since the accused were residents of the Sangam Vihar area adjacent to the forest belt, the police extensively searched the area along with sniffer dogs. A bag with the original citation in it was finally spotted," Baaniya added.

The citation was seized and is a part of the case property now. It would be handed over to Satyarthi after due court procedure. The team members will be rewarded suitably, the senior cop said.
