Come June and Delhi will have a 500-bed emergency block at Safdarjung Hospital. Touted as one of the country's biggest emergency blocks, it is all set to be functional from June 1.

"The work is complete and we are all set to start by June 1. This new ward will come as a relief to the patients who travel from all parts of the country," said Dr AK Rai, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital. He added that the building is ready and the procurement process is on.

Currently, the hospital has a 50-bed emergency ward which caters to more than 1,000 patients on a regular basis. Officials said the new block is one of the biggest investments with Rs 1,200 crore by the Central government to develop infrastructure in the health sector, which was sanctioned by the Parliament.

With the new emergency block coming up, the old (casualty) block will be demolished to make way for a new Mother and Child Block. On most days of the year, doctors attend to more than 6,000 out-patients on an average while the wards are home to around 2,000 patients.

"The new block will help reduce the burden from existing facilities. We are in touch with officials from the health ministry to inform them about the inauguration date. We had earlier planned to begin from April but couldn't due to administrative reasons. We don't want to delay it any further," added Dr Rai.

According to sources, a battle had been brewing between the hospital's faculty and AIIMS former Director MC Misra, who wanted the block to be under the control of the premier institute rather than Safdarjung Hospital. However, the faculty members of Safdarjung Hospital had flagged Union Health Minister JP Nadda, objecting to Misra's proposal.
