The rising temperature in Delhi is giving a tough time to the residents of the capital, with mercury levels crossing the 40 degrees Celsius mark. What's worse? The temperatures are predicted to sore higher in the coming days.

Doctors have cautioned patients to seek immediate medical help in case high fever, dizziness, and vomiting persists for more than two days. People are advised to stay indoors as much possible.

"In the last five-six days, there has been a rise of about 20-25 per cent in the cases of heat stroke, dehydration, upset stomach, and typhoid. Those diagnosed with typhoid, viral fever, and jaundice are advised admission for three days," said Dr Meenakshi Jain, senior consultant, internal medicine, Max Hospital.

The humidity level on Friday was recorded at 43 per cent. On Thursday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were 40.8 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Private and government hospitals have been swamped with cases of viral infections, throat ache, diarrhoea, and typhoid. City doctors have advised residents to avoid consuming outside food and maintain proper hygiene.

"Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are big risks during the summers. One must move to a cooler place, stop all exertional activities like walking, and drink cool water, in such cases. Acute enteritis resulting in diarrhoea is also common in this weather. Avoid eating outside, drink butter milk, eat bananas, and ensure you are well hydrated," said Dr Jaswinder Singh Anand, senior consultant, department of Internal medicine, Medanta.

"It has become impossible to commute in this weather. I have been having body ache and fever from the last two days. Doctors have told me that it is due to heat exertion," said Anika Verma, a resident of Rajouri Garden.

Experts add that having plenty of water will help in diluting body liquids, as well as calcium oxalate, the substances that form most types of kidney stones.
