Delhi's old Chandni Chowk area, which is perpetually crowded and attracts heavy footfalls, had attracted several e-rickshaws as well, as the drivers looked to earn quick profits by operating in such a crowded neighbourhood. The easy accessibility of e-rickshaws also meant that visitors had metro station connectivity. However, this has had one unfortunate side-effect: Pedestrians have no place to walk.

Footpaths in front of the shops have been encroached upon by shopkeepers who try to get some extra space to display their wares, and improve the branding of products on offer.

But with footpaths encroached by shops and roads occupied by e-rickshaws, pedestrians have only option left: Stay away from the market altogether. Loss of valuable business has hit sales, and traders have said the issue must be resolved very quickly.

But it's not just Chandni Chowk alone; the lack of parking space also affects the entire neighbourhood, which further worsens the issue. Even traders who come from the Capital's border areas park their vehicles on the roads.

"Earlier, we had some parking space near the market, so many of us who come from the outskirts of Delhi had some parking facility in place. Now we have been demanding parking space near the Red Fort, so that traders aren't forced to park on the roads," said RK Ram, who owns an electronics shop in Chandni Chowk.

Narrow Roads, No Sidewalks

  • Chandni Chowk witnesses large numbers of visitors, but inadequate parking  means people park on the footpaths.
  • Shopkeepers have also utilised the footpaths to display their wares, meaning the pedestrians have started avoiding the market altogether.
