A Railway Police Force (RPF) constable was arrested on Saturday in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a 28-year-old LIC agent in North Delhi's Sarai Rohilla area. The body of the LIC agent was put in a trunk and thrown in a riverbed in Itawa from where it was recovered after an 8-hour search operation on Sunday. An Uttar Pradesh (UP) police constable involved in the crime is absconding.

According to the police, the accused RPF constable Ajay Kumar along with UP Police constable Sarvesh hatched a plan to kidnap the LIC agent for a ransom as they both were in need of money. The victim Prem Kumar (28) resided in the Moti Bagh area. Ajay was Prem's former client and on one occasion he told him that his friend Sarvesh who works in UP police wanted to get a life insurance policy worth a crore.

The trio met and Prem checked some documents of his. On July 19, as per their plan, they called Prem to Ajay house in the morning. The duo tried to overpower him but because of his built and structure, they were not successful. In an attempt to overpower him, they struck a rope in his neck and tried to pull him which eventually led to his death. They then dumped the body in one of the trunks and loaded it in an Innova car. They drove to Itawa and pushed the trunk in the riverbed and returned to Delhi.

Prem's father who also works as an LIC agent informed the police about his missing son and about the two men he was scheduled to meet that day. Initially, Ajay denied meeting Prem but later Prem's motor-cycle was recovered near Ajay's house --- barely 50 metre away. "On sustained interrogation, he confessed that he and constable Sarvesh of the UP police wanted to kidnap Prem for ransom and while trying to overpower him, he was killed. They then disposed of the body in a riverbed at Itawa in a trunk," said Nupur Prasad, DCP, North.

On the instance of Ajay, a team was sent to Itawa and the body was recovered. Ajay had liver issues and had already spent around Rs 5 lakh on his treatment. Moreover, he was also suspended from his duty. On the other hand constable Sarvesh, posted with Bannadevi police station in Aligarh, had taken leave from work. Raids are being conducted to nab him.
