A large number of residents in the Capital submitted suggestions on the Draft Delhi Maintenance & Management of Parking Rules 2017 to the transport commissioner of Delhi government on Friday. Residents requested the authorities to prepare a three year parking roadmap with clear deadlines.

"We are not sure whether any agency has carried out any survey to assess the present dwelling unit density per hectare which is a must before proceeding with this. Further, it has not assessed the number of stilts have been converted and are being used for purposes other than parking while cars are parked outside on roads," said Rajiv Kakria, member of GK1 residents welfare association (RWA).

According to the guidelines, Area Parking Plan is to provide comprehensive facilities for all modes including pedestrians, cycle tracks, non-motorised vehicles, vending zones, bus stops, public amenities, etc in addition to on-street and off-street parking for private vehicles.

The civic bodies will play a crucial role in implementing the policy, as most of parking spaces in the city are managed by them.

"One should discourage people who use cars for home-office-home travel, turning parking space unproductive for 8-14 hours. Shoppers and visitors to offices occupy parking space for a limited period of time, and the same space is utilised multiple times," he added.
