The Staff Council of Delhi University’s (DU) Ramjas College conducted an emergency meeting on Monday, and formed an internal inquiry committee to investigate the violent clashes that took place in the college premises on February 21 and 22.

“The inquiry committee will investigate and submit its report in a time-bound manner,” a senior faculty member said.

The college authorities have also requested students and teachers, including from other colleges, to volunteer as witnesses or submit any evidence that they might have. “Those willing to depose as witnesses or produce evidence are requested to submit the same to the inquiry committee,” he said.

The faculty member added: “Numerous videos and pictures of violent clashes are being uploaded and shared on social media. We want students, teachers, and anyone who is willing to cooperate to come forward and submit these evidences with the committee.” He added that the college authorities have maintained their stand of supporting the faculty members who had organised the February 21 seminar.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)-led Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), meanwhile, reiterated its demand for action against the organisers of the seminar titled ‘Culture of Protest’, in which Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid were invited.

The seminar was called off after ABVP objected to the invitation sent to the JNU students. The very next day, hundreds of students affiliated to the Leftist All India Students’ Association (AISA) and RSS-backed ABVP attacked each other, causing serious injuries to many.

“The committee should take strict action against those faculty members who had organised the event and had invited anti-national elements to our university,” DUSU President and ABVP member Amit Tanwar said. “Also, immediate action should be taken against those who raised anti-national slogans in Ramjas College on February 21,” he added.

Earlier, on February 25, Ramjas’ Staff Council had organised another meeting, wherein it was decided that the college will form an internal investigation committee to look into the clashes.
