Delhi University's (DU) Ramjas College, on Tuesday, had to call off a seminar in which Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid Shora were invited, after members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a BJP affiliate, launched a protest against their participation.

The two were invited to talk during the two-day seminar on the 'culture of protests', organised by the college's English Department. Khalid was to speak on Tuesday, while Shehla was to participate on Wednesday.

According to the college authorities, the event was cancelled to maintain peace on the campus. "No complaint was received and no case case has been registered," the police said.

The protesters, led by the Delhi University's Students' Union (DUSU), reached the spot even before Khalid had arrived, and started sloganeering against him. "We also met the Principal and expressed our disapproval. These people had raised anti-national slogans at the JNU campus on February 9, last year," DUSU President Amit Tanwar said.

The protesters allegedly pelted stones at the seminar hall. "They cut off the power supply to the hall and started pelting stones," Vinita Chandra, one of the organisers, said.

Slamming the protesters, Khalid said: "I got to know from a friend in Ramjas that ABVP goons had surrounded the seminar room, and locked students and teachers inside. They were also throwing stones and broke the windows."

He further claimed that the protesters threatened the organisers, saying, "we will disfigure your face in a way that you will be unrecognisable". "Such open brazenness is possible only because of the institutional impunity that the ABVP goons enjoy in universities," Khalid added.
