The national Capital received heavy rainfall on Republic Day, with India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials confirming that it was the decade's heaviest rainfall in the month of January in a single day. The National Capital Region (NCR) will continue to receive showers until Friday morning, they added.

Delhi recorded 23.7 mm of rainfall at Safdarjung and 29 mm at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

"The amount of rainfall the Capital received on Thursday was heaviest within 24 hours in the last 10 years during this month, as per the records available with the IMD," said Dr Devendra Pradhan, Deputy Director General, IMD.

"This year's winter has been warmer as compared to the last few years. January 26 is usually a day of severe cold. This January, besides a brief cold spell and Thursday's rain, the rest of the month has remained pleasant, not exactly cold," Pradhan said.

The maximum temperature on Thursday was recorded at 19 degrees Celsius, while it was around 22 degrees Celsius the day before.

The rest of the week is expected to have hazy days, with the minimum temperature settling between 9 and 10 degrees Celsius, and the maximum temperature likely to hover around 20-21 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, hailstorms were experienced in neighbouring states, including Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ambala, Bhiwani in Punjab, and parts of Haryana.

High wind speeds and continuous rainfall disrupted flight operations at Delhi airport on Thursday. Over 100 flights were delayed due to the inclement weather while 7 flights were diverted. There were no cancellations.
