The major inter-state bus terminals (ISBT) including Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan, stuck for proposed overhaul for over three years, are expected to start work as the Delhi government plans to hand over the terminals to the Public Works Department (PWD) for the redevelopment work.

The two bus terminals lacking basic amenities have been operating from temporary sheds despite catering to thousands of passengers every day for more than a decade.

The Transport Department in a meeting on Thursday with the transport minister Kailash Gahlot decided to hand over the world on the two projects to the PWD.

"We have received some approvals from the concerned agencies and now rcowct to allot work soon," said a senior Delhi government official.

The renovation plans of the two inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs) had been stuck since 2013 pending approvals from various agencies.

While the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT had existed for 18 years on the land which under the Delhi master plan 2021 has been earmarked as a green belt and hence no construction was permitted there.

The plan to change the land use from green belt to transportation was sent to the DDA in 2013, but could not be approved.

The Sarai Kale Khan terminal caters mostly to buses going to Rajasthan, UP, Haryana and few DTC buses. It is also critically located near the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. The ISBT was established in 1996 and has been since running through temporary sheds.
