The Delhi government on Sunday ordered a magisterial inquiry after a five-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a drunk peon at a private school in East Delhi's Gandhi Nagar. The crime took place at Tagore Public School on Saturday and the accused, Vikas, was arrested later in the night.

The Sub-divisional Magistrate of Vivek Vihar area has been told to submit his report within three days. The survivor's condition is stated to be stable, but she will take a couple of days to recover, doctors said. The girl has now refused to go to the school.

"She came home and did not say anything out of fear. Later, I saw her cleaning her wounds... she was bleeding. She said she got injured in the school. I informed my husband who came home and we rushed her to hospital," said the mother.

"Now my daughter calls the school employee 'gande uncle' and doesn't want to go to school anymore... even I don't want to send her. Don't know if we as parents should ensure the safety of our children by keeping them uneducated," she said.

It was only after the doctors and the police assured her that they would beat up the accused, she described him as "a fat, bald man who was wearing a red cap." Later, she identified him through a sketch, said the father.

The accused had been associated with the school for the last three years. Sources said he had once manhandled a female teacher who later left the school. He earlier worked as a driver.

The girl had gone to the water cooler when the accused called out to her and took her inside a store room. He then assaulted her and even shoved his hand inside her mouth to threaten her, the police said.

The father claimed that there medical papers went missing at the hospital. He said he called up the class teacher, Simran, who initially refused to come but later reached the hospital with sweets and candies.

"She even asked us not to reveal the name of the school in order to save its reputation. She tried to convince us to hush up the matter," said the father. The nurse at the hospital who had informed the family that it could be a case of sexual assault later went missing after talks with the teacher.

"This is a shameful incident... a five-year-old girl was raped within her school premises. We have been seeing such cases again and again. I suggest that the investigation is completed soon and the accused is given the death sentence... we should spread fear among such accused who target minors," said Swati Maliwal, Chief, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).

"We have issued a notice to the school, seeking details on whether it got police verification done of its non-teaching staff. Are there CCTV cameras on the premises? Did the school timely report the incident? These questions must be answered in 72 hours," she added.

The Shahdara district police registered a case under sections of rape and the POCSO Act against the accused.

Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik directed the force to keep a check at schools and make sure security audits are carried out.
