A 50-year-old man, practising as a priest, alleged that he was roughed up and ostracised by the locals of the Dhoom Manikpur village at Dadri after he was found living with a widow in the temple.

A video of women reportedly assaulting the vehicle of the priest also went viral on social media on Sunday where the villagers accused him of ‘adultery’. The incident had taken place on April 12, the police said.

“We had to intervene and had to ensure that the baba could be saved from the wrath of around 25 women who had barged inside the temple,” said a senior police officer.

According to the police, Kanhaiyya Giri (50), the temple priest, has been living in the temple of Dhoom Manikpur as one of the three priests for the past 25 years. However, for the past few days, villagers have been alleging that Giri was living with a widow (name withheld to protect identity) inside the temple.

“A local woman, Krishna, objected that the widow was the former wife of her deceased brother and it is unacceptable for the priest to stay with her. So on April 12, a group of 20-25 angry women allegedly roughed up Giri and attacked his Scorpio car alleging that he was raping the widow. However, we have not received any complaint from the widow,” said a senior police officer.

Later in the day,  Krishna alleged that Giri had kept the widow inside the temple under some influence and the panchayat then decided to send the widow home along with Krishna, the police said.

The police said Giri claimed that he was ostracised from the village after the police refused to take legal action on the complaint of the panchayat. “We explained to Giri that his life is in danger, if he continues to stay in the temple as it belongs to the villagers and that the locals are unhappy with his errand ways. He then left for another temple in the district and his whereabouts are unknown. ” said a senior police officer.
