Pregnant woman dies as truck hits husband's bike

In a tragic incident, a five-month pregnant woman, who was on her way to the hospital for a routine check-up along with her husband, was crushed under the wheels of a truck in Outer Delhi's Mongolpuri area on Tuesday. The errant truck driver was arrested by the police.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning when Janki Devi (28) along with her husband Uma Shankar were on their way to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for a routine ultrasound check-up. The couple was travelling on their motorcycle when the incident took place."My wife and I were going for an ultrasound to the hospital. When we were just about to take a turn, a speeding truck hit us. I fell towards the front of the bike while my wife fell at the back. Her head and her forearm were crushed under the wheels of the truck. We rushed her to the hospital but she was declared brought dead on arrival, said Shankar.

The locals informed the police and also caught hold of the accused driver. He was later handed over to the police. The accused has been identified as Ashu Khan. He was driving a truck bearing an Uttar Pradesh number.

Shankar's nephew, Sanjeev stated that Shankar was riding the biking at a slow pace since they had to take a turn."My aunt and uncle had left home in the morning for the medical check-up. This was their third child. They have a son and daughter as well," he said.

"A case under sections of rash and negligent driving causing death and culpable homicide has been registered. The arrested driver had offloaded goods in the Mongolpuri industrial area," said MN Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Outer Delhi.

  • The locals informed the police and also caught hold of the accused driver. He was later handed over to the police. The accused has been identified as Ashu Khan. He was driving a truck bearing an Uttar Pradesh number.
