Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor, Atul Johri, resigned from all administrative posts on Friday, a day after a group of female students accused him of various degrees of sexual harassment. An FIR was registered against him late on Thursday night at Vasant Kunj Police Station.

After a day-long protest at the varsity's administrative building by the students along with the complainants, JNU released a statement announcing Johri's resignation. The administration, however, did not mention Johri's name in the statement.

"A few students from the school of Life Sciences (SLS) of JNU met with top administrative officials and verbally expressed their grievance. They were assured that JNU administration will look into their grievances through the appropriate body as per the rules/mechanism of the university."

"The concerned professor, against whom such complaint has been made, in the meantime tendered his resignation from his administrative positions," the administration said. Despite several attempts to reach him, Johri did not respond.

Johri, a professor at School of Life Sciences , held several administrative posts, including director of both Internal Quality Assurance Cell and UGC - Human Resource Development Centre, and Warden of Chandrabhaga Hostel.

Meanwhile, the students said that they will continue their protest until the concerned professor is arrested. "We immediately demand the arrest of Johri in order to have a free and fair probe," JNUSU (Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union) said in a statement.
