Post gas leak, JP Nadda tells govt hospitals to be on alert

AIIMS has constituted a 5-member team including doctors from National Poisons Information Centre

Union Minister JP Nadda alerted the central government-run hospitals after a gas leak in Delhi's Tughlakabad area affected over 300 students who were studying in the nearby schools when the incident took place.

A committee has been formed by the Union Health ministry to look into the leakage incident. Around 20 patients were also taken to Safdarjung hospital for the treatment. "We had received 20 kids in the emergency department of the hospital. All the students were given initial treatment and are stable," said a senior doctor from Safdarjung hospital.

Several students were hospitalized after they complained of irritation in eyes due to gas leakage from a container depot near their school. "Central GoI hospitals have been instructed to be ready to help all victims of Delhi gas leak incident. My prayers are with children & families," Nadda, the Union Minister For Health, tweeted.

The All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS also constituted a five-member team to monitor the victims. "A team of multi-speciality doctors have been formed who will be visiting the site and monitor the progress of the victims," AIIMS spokesperson said.

This team of five includes doctors from AIIMS and the National Poisonous Information Centre.

The fact that a school was near a depot from the gas leak is said to have come is enough cause for alarm. The government should answer how this was allowed to happen
Safety standards needed to looked at and the government needs to ensure that those dealing with such hazardous chemicals and disposing of them properly. Clearly, with this recent incident this is not being done.
