A policeman was injured on Tuesday evening in an encounter with an armed gang of auto lifters in Dwarka area. 

The incident took place after a team of Delhi police received inputs that the gang would strike Dwarka again. The team led by Sub Inspector Naveen laid a trap to intercept the miscreants, but they opened fire at the cops in a bid to escape. In a brief exchange of fire, Naveen was shot at.

The accused managed to flee, and the policeman underwent surgery on Wednesday.

According to senior police officers, a team of eight policemen from the special staff of Dwarka district, which Naveen was leading, had received inputs that four to five armed men wanted in cases of auto lifting would lift another vehicle.

"In order to intercept the gang, the police team left in two vehicles for Delhi Cantt area, where the accused were expected to arrive. The police team spotted the accused in a grey Swift Dzire on the Ring Road near Army Medical College and tried to intercept their vehicle. But the occupants, in order to escape, opened fire at the police team," said a police officer.

In retaliation, the police also opened fire. In the exchange, one bullet fired by the accused hit Naveen in his right thigh.

"But despite sustaining the injury, Naveen and other police officers kept firing in retaliation and targeted the tyre of the vehicle in which the accused were trying to make their escape. They succeeded in their attempt. Naveen was, meanwhile, rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment. The bullet pierced through his thigh, leaving his body from the left hip. It has caused severe internal damage. He is in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and underwent a surgery on Wednesday morning," the officer said.

The police are now tracing the accused and the CCTV footage has been procured to identify the vehicle.

A case of attempt to murder and other charges has been registered at Naraina police station.
