For most people getting a ride in a police van would not be the happiest of experiences. But for 30-year-old pregnant Meera, the 15 minutes she spent in a police control room (PCR) van past midnight turned out to be the most treasured moments of her life. This is when she gave birth to a baby girl. The delivery safely carried out by Jaishree, a woman constable in Delhi Police who was assisted by two male colleagues, turned the vehicle into a makeshift labour room.

It was a routine patrol for Jaishree and her colleagues in Wazirabad when they received a call at 12.34 am on March 21 that a pregnant woman needed help. The usual routine PCR was patrolling in Wazirabad area and attending to various calls.

Recalling the day, Jaishree said, "After the successful delivery we dropped Meera at the hospital but all of us felt a connection with the baby and visited her again. We were happy to see Meera sitting with the little girl in her arms breastfeeding her," she said.

All Meera remembers from that night is the first cry of her baby who is now 10 days old and healthy. "She cried twice, that's when I got into senses. I thought, there is no chance of making it. It was like a miracle," she said. It was Meera's aunt who used a neigbour's mobile phone to call the police in the emergency situation.

"We rushed to the location and had to call multiple times to trace her location. We finally spotted her standing on the road struggling to cope with the pain," said Jaishree. It was a dark stretch on an uneven road and to rush her to the hospital in time was a challenge.

"I asked Meera to sit but the pain was unbearable. So with the help of a blanket I made a cushioning so that she could lie down. The road was bad and hence the car had to be driven at a slow pace which got us worried," she added.

Within the next minute, as she was trying to keep Meera calm she realised that she had already started bleeding and it would be too late to reach the hospital. Jaishree asked her colleague on the wheel to pull up. She then took a blanket and used it as a mattress while the other blanket was used as a curtain, which was held by her male colleagues.

A mother of three, Jaishree recalled her deliveries. "All my three children were born at home and while I was trying to carry out her delivery we were scared but confident that we will save the mother and the kid," she said.

Earlier, too there have been instances of a PCR turning into a labour room.

In 2016, two babies were born in a PCR van while so far in 2017 these vans have seen the birth of atleast 4 infants. "In 2016, the male staff in the control room vans facilitated the birth of two kids which is commendable, for us saving life is precious and more important," said Special Commissioner of Police, Operations.

Sub-Inspector Tejsingh along with ASI Krishan Kumar were on a patrol in January this year in Outer Delhi. "A call informing about a lady named Tinku who was in severe labour pain was received. We reached her residence and put her on a stretcher and were getting her down from the apartment. The moment we put her in the PCR she delivered the baby. There were other ladies of the house who helped," said ASI Krishan Kumar.
