The Delhi police on Monday arrested four youngsters for stealing e-vouchers worth Rs 92 lakh. Sunny Nehra (23), Azad Choudhary (18), Tejveer Sheoran (18) and Prakhar Aggarwal (19) did this to lead a luxurious life and splurged the money on air tickets, five-star hotels and luxury cars.

In fact, police arrested Nehra from a five-star hotel in Gurgaon, and on his confession, the others were held.

While Nehra and Choudhary are B Tech drop-outs, Sheoran is pursuing his BCA and Aggarwal his graduation. The accused have been booked under IPC Section 420 for cheating and Section 66 of the IT Act.

The act came to light on December 30 last year, after a complaint was filed at the Hauz Khas police station by an e-commerce firm, alleging that its website has been hacked and e-vouchers worth about Rs 1 crore were digitally stolen. The firm also told the police that the act was performed after hacking the payment gateway PayU.

"The complainant had provided voluminous data, which it procured from various e-merchant firms. The analysis revealed that e-vouchers of MakeMyTrip, Amazon, Flipkart, Big Bazar, Reliance Digital, Myntra.com, Yatra.com, Dominos Pizzas, Prestige, Titan, Provogue, Shoppers Stop and other companies were digitally shoplifted. The total loss to the complainant was assessed to be about Rs 92 lakh," said Ishwar Singh, DCP South.

Singh said that a special police team investigated the matter and data was solicited from PayU, Amazon, Flipkart, Reliance Digital, etc. Technical surveillance helped the police zero down on the accused Nehra.

During interrogation, the accused confessed that they developed an online association with various hackers in India as well as abroad. They built this network and gained access to virtual currency like bitcoins. "Bitcoins are a type of digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds," a senior police officer said.

The DCP said that the exact term to explain the gang's modus operandi is 'Data Tampering'. "Various types of cyber crimes committed using this expertise are adding cash backs i.e. enhancing the value of cashback offers, using the same gift card again and again without detection, placing online orders without making any payment or by making small payments. Nehra told us that his hacker friends informed him that PayU, a leading payment gateway, was suffering from vulnerability and could be tested for data tampering," Singh said.

In the raid on Nehra's room in the five-star hotel, police recovered high-end electronic equipment, including a laptop used for high-level programming, with 256 GB RAM, capable of supporting a hacking tool.

Further investigations are under way, the police said.
