The spy ring run by Pakistani High Commission officials involving Indian agents, approached army personnel to be part of the syndicate, Shoaib, the third Indian arrested by Delhi Police, has revealed.

Shoaib's claim has prompted investigators to probe whether serving or retired army officials were part of the espionage racket busted by Delhi Police.

Shoaib who was arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police after being brought to Delhi from Jodhpur revealed that they also tried to entice an Indian Army personnel into spying when the latter visited Pakistan High Commission (PHC) to get a visa but he refused.

Shoaib had come in contact with the Pakistan High Commission staffer, Mehmood Akhtar around four years back and ever since kept in regular touch with him. A Delhi Court on Friday sent Shoaib to 11 days police custody. Akhtar, a Havildar in the Pakistani Army was working on deputation for ISI and was sent to the High Commission as a spy. Since he enjoyed diplomatic immunity he was not arrested but has been asked to leave the country.

The army personnel whose name the accused men did not reveal had gone to the PHC for obtaining a visa so that he could visit his family in Pakistan and was persuaded by Akhtar to act as a spy to which he refused.

Shoaib worked as a visa agent and found prospective spies in people who approached him for visa. He targeted people who wished to visit a Hindu Temple in Sind, Pakistan. Sources revealed that some Indians who had gone to visit the temple worked for him as a spy on their return back to the country. Shoaib was also informed about prospective spies by Akhtar. Since he was well entrenched into the PHC, he would get visa to Pakistan several times.

Shoaib was a regular visitor at the PHC and a visitor ID card was recovered from his possession as well. Crime branch officials revealed that Shoaib had visited Pakistan around six times as his paternal family lived there. "When the mobile phones of Maulana Ramzan and Subhash Jangir were switched off, he realized things were amiss and took a train back to Jodhpur to evade arrest," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav.

The three arrested accused will be interrogated together. He also tried to destroy his white colour Samsung tablet so that the police does not get the data. The Crime branch officials are now trying to retrieve the data from the tablet.

Maps of Sir Creek border area in Gujarat and deployment of forces have been recovered from the accused men. Sources believe that they had already sent some important maps in connection with deployment of strategic installations of the Army in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Shoaib along with Ramzan and Jangir arrived in the National Capital on October 26,2016.

While Ramzan and Jangir went ahead to give the documents to Akhtar, Shoaib stayed back at the Hotel Shantikunj in Old Delhi area. Hotel staff informed the police that Shoaib's father was a regular visitor at the hotel and even Shoaib had come and stayed their earlier. On the day when the two spies were arrested Shoaib entered the hotel lobby but did not take a room. "He came in the lobby and said he wanted to freshen up. After 15-20 minutes he left the hotel premises. Later the police officers entered and asked for him but he did not return to the hotel," said a hotel staff member.
