"Police officials don't register complaints of our (north eastern) people, we don't believe in these so-called representatives of the North-east cell. We are very unhappy with the system," said one north-eastern resident speaking with DNA regarding the problems they face with the police. Four years after Nido Tania's barbaric murder in the Lajpat Nagar area, north-eastern residents still face ridicule for their appearance and linguistic divide.

An increasing number of north-easterns come to the national Capital for education and in search of jobs and this has led to an increased number of crimes against them. Following the formation of the committee, about 2,700 crimes involving north-easterns as victims have been reported since February 2014 till February 2017. The increase in crime rates against NE residents led to the formation of the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER) with a manpower of about 40 personnel and a helpline number (1093).

"We feel the need to tend to the victims because they sound so helpless when they call. Most of us are college students and make do with whatever money we get from home and started volunteering in the hopes of reducing these crimes and helping the victims. But police stations don't take it seriously even after we show our identity cards, they sometimes refuse to even write down complaints or they will reduce the magnitude of the situation in the FIR," said a Delhi Police North Eastern Representative (DPNER) speaking with DNA.

"We are simple and unaggressive people by nature. But the people here take advantage of our nature. From the station house officer, investigating officers, inspectors to constables, all of them sideline our complaints. We have to make calls to the SPUNER team or the North East officer who in return call them after which these police officials register our complaint," said a representative speaking of the problems they face while registering complaints at police stations.
