In a bid to create awareness among people on the rising levels of air pollution in the Capital, Delhi University's PGDAV College, in collaboration with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), has decided to install an "Air Quality Monitoring Station" at its campus.

This initiative will be the first of its kind initiative by any educational institution in Delhi and will be a part of DPCC's mega project under which 20 such fully automatic stations will be installed at prominent places across the city.

"The stations will provide real time air quality data, both for scientific analysis and public awareness. For the fulfillment of the same, one such station is going to be established at the campus of PGDAV (evening) located at Nehru Nagar," a senior DPCC official said.

"The station will start functioning by the second week of September and will monitor the air quality of Nehru Nagar and adjoining areas like Maharani Bagh, Ashram, Srinivaspuri, Lajpatnagar and so on," he added.

According to PGDAV College principal RK Gupta, the college had approached the DPCC and took the initiative following the directions of Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

"We will be the first educational institution in the city to have an ultra-modern station costing Rs 2 crore approximately," Gupta said.

The college has also planned to encourage its faculty members and students to use the station for their research purpose. "We will encourage students and faculty members to gather the data from time to time to for their research on growing air pollution in the area. They can easily track the trend and make a better use of it," he added.

Other prominent locations where the stations are being established are Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Karni Singh Shooting Range, Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium etc.
