Adding colour to the ongoing municipal election campaigning, yesteryears' Dream Girl, BJP MP Hema Malini joined the party campaign on Saturday. With just a few days left for the elections, campaigning is entering its last and the most aggressive leg.

Clad in a magenta and pink sari and riding a saffron-coloured mini bus, Malini was accompanied by Union Minister and BJP MP from north Delhi's Chandni Chowk, Harsh Vardhan. The two leaders waved to people as they passed through seven wards of the constituency, with people huddled in their balconies and on roads to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-politician.

Amid slogans such as 'Ab ki baar teen hi naam, Modi, Yogi, Jai Shree Ram', and 'Dilli mange kamal nishan', the caravan started from the GT Road in Azadpur and concluded in Sadar Bazar.

Showering praises on the BJP-led government at the Centre and in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Malini said: "The party has done remarkable work, both at the Centre as well as in the MCD. They should be given another chance in the upcoming elections."

Party candidates from every ward accompanied the two leaders while the caravan passed through their respective areas. Manoj Goyal, a party official in the Kamala Nagar ward, said: "It's very important that the locals see the candidate of their area with Hemaji. It influences them."

The crowd greeted the MP with slogans such as 'Hema Malini zindabad' and 'Dream Girl is here', while showering rose petals on her. From senior citizens to teenagers, everyone seemed to be in awe of her. "I am a fan. I have been watching her movies since I was a kid and now, finally, I got a chance to see her," Model Town resident Suresh Gupta, 65, said.

Echoing the sentiment, Class X student Ritwika Gupta, 15, said: "She is an evergreen beauty. I'm so glad that BJP has brought her in my area for canvassing. We are thrilled to see her."

Meanwhile, a lot of people seemed disappointed as well when the party workers did not allow them to click pictures with Malini, as was earlier promised. "They asked us to come in huge numbers and promised that we will be given a chance to click pictures with her. But now, nobody is allowed to go near her rath (mini bus)," Lal Bagh resident Sunaina Verma, 35, said.

BJP has launched a star-studded poll campaign for the civic polls, and popular Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan and Punjabi Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans are also scheduled to take out road shows in the coming days. The municipal polls for 272 wards is scheduled for April 23 and the results will be declared on April 26.
