A portion of a pavement outside the underground Metro station in Greater Kailash caved in due to the accumulation of water after heavy rainfall that lashed the city early Friday morning. South, Central and South-East Delhi received heavy downpour. The rain is likely to continue till Sunday, with maximum temperature hovering between 34 to 32 degrees Celsius.

"Greater Kailash is a low lying area having regular drainage issues. Repair work of the caved in portion is in progress and the affected area will be completely restored by tomorrow morning. However, Metro services are running normally on the Botanical Garden-Janakpuri West Magenta Line. The DMRC is now filling below the road with additional concrete to avoid the recurrence of this problem in future"Anuj Dayal, executive director, Corporate Communications, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a statement released by the body after the incident.

The Metro station was opened to the public in May when the DMRC extended the commercial operations of the Magenta Line till the last destination of Janakpuri West station. In the first phase, the Metro ran only up to Kalkaji Mandir Metro station, which also acts as an interchange for the Blue Line.

Meanwhile, the Safdarjung observatory recorded 3.4mm rainfall and its Palam counterpart got 1.1mm on Friday. Office-goers had a tough time as rains graced the city during the peak hours, slowing down traffic in several parts of the national Capital.

While the city received relief from the heat in the morning, humidity level rocketed to 91 per cent, making the weather sultry as the day progressed. However, the sky remained overcast throughout the day. The maximum temperature settled at 37.8 degrees Celsius in the morning, which was three notches above season's average, and came down to 32 degrees by evening. The minimum temperature was 27 degrees Celsius. The meteorological department has predicted that rain will continue to lash the city over the weekend also. The sky will remain generally cloudy with moderate rain. the weatherman has also forecast mercury to settle at 34 degrees Celsius as the maximum temperature.
