Surbhi Yadav, a resident of the Badarpur area, was brought to Lok Nayak Hospital Emergency by her family on Thursday morning after she developed severe pain in her stomach. The 22-year-old was sent elsewhere as there were no resident doctors to treat a patient who was in severe pain.

The news of the senior residents going on strike since Wednesday morning and shutting all services including emergency ones, led to a slump in the number of patients visiting the three major Delhi government hospitals including Maulana Azad Medical College and associated hospitals.

Delhi government's biggest hospital — Lok Nayak Hospital — sees 1,000 patients on an average every day, but it received only 75 patients on Wednesday and 50 till Thursday afternoon.

Emergency, Casualty, and Out-Patient Departments of all the associated hospitals including Lok Nayak Hospital, GB Pant Hospital, Sushruta Trauma Centre, and Guru Nanak Eye Centre remained dysfunctional on Thursday as well.

"I believe this is not the right way to raise voice against a situation. Doctors' services come under ESMA — Essential Services Maintenance Act i.e., these services can affect the life of people and should not be disrupted," said Dr Ritu Saxena, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Department of Accident and Emergency, Lok Nayak Hospital.

"Due to the shortage of staff and despite it being a festival, most of us senior doctors and faculty are working today. We cannot afford to not be there for our patients. On Holi, we see an increased rush noon onwards, with patients coming in with all kinds of injuries. I am glad that the strike has been called off now," said Saxena, while cancelling a doctor's Holi leave.

Patients were being sent to Dr Hedgewar Aarogya Sansthan and Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital from Lok Nayak Hospital. Those who needed to be stabilised before sending away were being attended to by the limited staff.

The strike was called off on Thursday at 9 pm.
