The GH9 DDA market road in Paschim Vihar, where a 17-year-old was killed by a speeding Mercedes on Sunday night, is no less than a racing track during the late hours.

The Residents Welfare Association (RWA) members of the GH9 Block said they have no option left now as the speed breakers they built to curb the menace of speeding cars were broken down by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) after a court order. The nearly 300-m-long stretch is completely signal-free.

Sunday’s accident has yet again brought to light the grievances of the residents. RWA General Secretary NK Saini, who was present at the spot, confirmed that the car was a Mercedes. “Despite so many of us standing there, none of us could jot down the number as the car was travelling at such a high speed. It was a silver Mercedes of an old model,” he said.

“There are no speed breakers on the road, which gives commuters a free run. Even if we build them, the North MCD breaks them down because of the court orders. Cars pass through the area at a speed of over 140 kmph, and at times, even more than that,” RWA President Rajesh Dabas said.

He further said that in order to save themselves, the residents make sure that they enter and exit the colony at a snail’s pace. The RWA has sent several letters to various authorities in this regard but all in vain. The Mianwali police station, which has jurisdiction over the area, is just 2 km from the accident location. Police teams patrol the area but there are no barricades.

The entrance gate built by the RWA was also broken down by the MCD. Besides, a robbery took place in a house on the main road in the adjacent LIC Colony, but police investigations reached no conclusion. “Minor robberies take place in our society from time to time but despite being provided with CCTV footage, the police have not done anything,” Dabas added.

And it’s not just the speeding cars that are making the lives of residents miserable. Vehicles with tinted window panes make it extremely difficult to see the occupants.
