The Delhi Police's 'neighbourhood watch' schemes, aimed at strengthening the local vigilance, seem to have failed as most incidents of crime against women in the Capital are being reported from public parks and gardens.
In one such incident on Tuesday, a minor girl accused an acquaintance of raping her in a park in Rohini's Begumpur area. The two had gone to the park around 9.30 pm on the motorcycle of the 22-year-old man. When she returned home late, her parents scolded her. She then told them that she was raped by two men in the park. A medical examination confirmed the sexual assault, after which, a case of gang rape under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POCSO Act was registered. Counselling sessions were arranged for the girl, police said.
Later, however, the girl changed her statement and revealed that it was not a gangrape and that her friend had raped her. The accused also confessed and has been arrested.
Recently, many such incidents have been reported wherein women were targeted in public parks, which now seem to have become hideouts for notorious elements.
Earlier this week, a man was lynched when he was caught some people trying to take a toddler to a secluded park in east Delhi. Then in April this year, a 45-year-old journalist was attacked and left critically injured by a group of unidentified persons when she objected to their public drinking at a park in Bharat Nagar area of northwest Delhi.
In February, a 26-year-old woman was sexually assaulted, beaten up, and robbed inside the Deer Park adjacent to posh Hauz Khas Village area in south Delhi around 1.30 am.
